Family / Parenting, Pregnancy Care, and Public Health

Provided by Sooke Family Resource Society

Provides various family services such as pre and postnatal programs, family support and more.

The following programs are offered:

Prenatal Education and Outreach: Provides local group or individual prenatal education, support, and outreach to pregnant women and their families in Sooke and the surrounding areas. Prenatal outreach is offered at no cost. Individuals seeking additional support during pregnancy or those aware of someone who needs help are encouraged to contact the Sooke Family Resource Society at the number below.

Prenatal Group Education: A 6-week group classes for pregnant women and their birthing partner throughout the year. Pricing is available on a sliding scale and child-minding is available on-site if needed. For registration, please contact: tnorquay@sfrs.ca.

Class topics include:

Healthy lifestyle for pregnancy
Nutrition and exercise
Late pregnancy symptoms and how to cope with them
Warning signs in late pregnancy and preterm labour
Physical and emotional process of birth
Natural pain management for labour
Medications for pain in labour
Common medical procedures
Cesarean birth
Infant feeding and nutrition
Life with your new baby!

Prenatal Outreach Services: Outreach services are available for individuals with additional needs during pregnancy. These services may include collaboration with the Island Health Best Babies Program. Services include:

One-to-one pregnancy education and support
Nutritional support through food vouchers and/or healthy eating education.
Prenatal Vitamins.
Referrals to community resources.
Resource lending library.

Family Support Program: Helps families who are experiencing difficulties with family life and parenting. Offers one-to-one support and mentoring to improve parenting skills, confidence, and self-sufficiency.
Family Support Workers help with:

Individual parent support
Parenting education
Referrals to community resources
Strengthening your healthy family life skills & home environment

Family Support Group: The parent-child playgroup is an extension of the Family Support Program, focusing on supportive parenting strategies and group-based support for parents with children aged 0–6. It is designed for families who may be facing life challenges such as:

single parenthood
low income
young parenthood
social anxiety
new to Canada or the community

Dad's Group: This is a discussion group for dads to share and support each other. The Dads group is open to all people who identify as a dad or are in a fathering role. The group meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. For registration, please contact: tnorquay@sfrs.ca.

Supported Access: Fee-for-service: For families not involved with MCFD and required by a court order to have supervised visits, the program provides an experienced supported access worker on a fee-for-service basis.

Family Preservation & Development: This program supports families with low to moderate risks and less complex needs, as well as families whose children have been removed from their homes due to high levels of risk. This program is only available with a referral from a Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Social Worker.
Supports can include:

Mentoring and coaching for parenting knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Parenting capacity assessments.
Supported access for children and their families.
In-home support, dependent on family need.

Toy and Resource Lending Library: Provides fun educational toys as well as themed bins and childcare equipment for children ages 0-10 years. Library membership is a free and excellent way to access over 1,000 books full of information on a wide range of topics, including pregnancy, infant development, child development, language and literacy, family relationships, and more.
