Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) in Emergency Departments - Island Health Area

Provides specialized mental health & addiction services, including intensive assessment and crisis intervention for patients arriving at select Emergency Departments with psychiatric disorders, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) are specialized care units within select hospital emergency departments that provide support for individuals aged 17 and over who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis related to mental health and/or substance use. These MSP-covered services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the hospitals listed below. Access PES by attending at the emergency department if needed; no referral is required.

- Specialized assessment, crisis management and initiation of treatment,
- Short-term crisis intervention and stabilization,
- Symptom management and recovery planning,
- Referral to the most appropriate level of care,
- Safety and discharge planning.
