Provides support to individuals and their loved ones struggling with substance use issues. The society helps clients find the support and resources they need, and educates the community on mental health and substance use issues.
Services Include:

Drop-In Session:The Drop-In Session staff provide a variety of services, including referrals to residential treatment, B.C. Housing and supportive recovery, as well as applications for Life Passes, information about detox, and how to apply. Umbrella workers will also discuss at length the available treatment options to find the perfect fit, and go over funding options to ensure the relevant expenses are covered.

Counselling: Offers professional counselling services for individuals and their loved ones. Umbrella also provides practicum placements for counselling students completing their Master’s degrees and offers access to a practicum counsellor specializing in expressive arts therapy on Thursdays. Counselling sessions are available by appointment and offered on a donation basis, with no one turned away due to lack of funds.

Outreach: Offers support, counsel, guidance, education, and advocacy to these individuals as they chart their journey toward reduction and/or abstinence. Umbrella outreach is staffed by individuals who are either in recovery or have been deeply impacted by addiction.

Group Support:
  • Hammer Time: Provides those in the trades with an opportunity for connection, support, and education. Facilitated by an Umbrella staff member with extensive construction experience, Hammer Time offers a safe space to openly discuss substance use and recovery. Hammer Time is held online via Zoom on Thursdays from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM. No registration is required. To access this group, please click here.
  • NA - Just for Today: Umbrella hosts a weekday Narcotics Anonymous meeting from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Women's Recovery Group: The Women’s Recovery Group focuses on those who identify as women and are seeking a safe space to give and receive support as they progress toward their personal recovery goals. Six weeks in length, the program is intended to empower women in early recovery by introducing them to topics like forgiveness, mindfulness, gratitude, and boundary-setting, among others.
  • SMART Recovery Meetings: Umbrella hosts two weekly SMART Recovery meetings. Thursday from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, two Umbrella-certified SMART facilitators host in person meeting at the Umbrella office on 2675 Bridge St. Everyone is welcome, no registration necessary. Every Wednesday, Umbrella offers SMART Recovery meeting via Zoom from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. To access this group, please click here (https://smartrecovery.zoom.us/j/96030390788). Passcode: 25840404
  • Comfortably UN-Numb: A four-week intensive outpatient recovery group hosted weekdays at Umbrella from 9:30 AM - Noon. Intended for about 15-20 participants, the group covers topics that are critical to progress in early recovery. These include gratitude, health & wellness, relapse prevention, and healthy relationships, among others. Registration required. Call or email the number below to access serivice.
  • Parents' Group: Provides support specific to those with children in active addiction. Due to the participants’ candour and the sensitive nature of the information shared, this is a closed group. Registration required. Call or email the number below to access serivice.
  • Intensive Journaling Group: This 6-week group help participants explore what journaling means and how it can help process emotions and regulate reactions. Offered on Monday evenings, in person. Registration is required. Call or email the number below to access serivice.
  • She Recovers: A global community dedicated to supporting women on their journey to recovery from various challenges, including trauma, substance use and mental health struggles. It is held on the last Sunday of the month from 10:30 AM - Noon, where women can come together for support, resources, and a sense of belonging.
  • Men's Support Group: A drop-in group for anyone who identifies as male, looking for support in mental health and substance use recovery. The group is hosted every Friday evening from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM.

Foundation House: A second-stage facility, ‘F House’ provides sanctuary to men having completed a minimum of 30 days in residential treatment. At Foundation House, residents are supported by trained staff who guide and mentor them in their individual quests to find sobriety and life purpose.

Potter House: A five-bed home situated almost directly behind Foundation House, Potter offers the chance for Foundation House residents to retain continuity and connection to their supportive recovery community.
