Child and Youth Aboriginal Mental Health Outreach

Provided by First Nations Health Authority

Supports Indigenous youth ages 12 to 18 through street outreach and one-to-one connection.
The Aboriginal Outreach Team focuses on building safe, trusting relationships so youth have consistent, reliable support. Youth are met where they are at, with support tailored to their individual needs. This may include assistance with immediate concerns or connections to programs and services at UNYA and within the broader community when youth are ready to engage.

This program offers culturally appropriate mental health counselling to Aboriginal youth and their families who have not been able to engage with and/or access mental health services. Mental health clinicians provide services on an outreach basis in the youth's own community environment.

The following services are provided:
  • Access to bus tickets, water, snacks, toiletries, and supplies for cold or wet weather.
  • Trauma-informed support and advocacy when meeting with health providers, probation officers, or other members of a care team.
  • Help with daily activities, or joining ceremonies and community events together.
  • Harm reduction information, access to clean supplies, and free naloxone kits.
  • Information and referrals to other programs and services for youth, families, and caregivers.
Eligibility: Youth ages 12 - 18 seeking support can reach out at any time. A family member, guardian, or community worker may also make a referral on their behalf.
