Counselling for Island Health parents with mental health disorders in their prenatal or postpartum period.
Specialized perinatal counselling for individuals and couples is provided to parents by:
  • Registered counsellors at standard private practice rates (typically for parents with extended health insurance)
  • Intern counsellors for $40 to $80 per session (typically for parents seeking low-cost counselling)
The program care coordinator responds to referrals within 1 to 2 business days, connecting with referred parents by phone to schedule them with a perinatal counsellor who fits their needs and preferences.

As needed, the care coordinator also helps parents identify and connect with no-cost perinatal counselling resources when available, and when the parent is eligible.

Perinatal counselling is provided to:
  • New or expectant parents residing in the Island Health area
Perinatal counselling is provided for:
  • Perinatal depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders
  • Traumatic birth experiences
  • Navigating difficult relationship challenges in the prenatal and postpartum periods
  • Perinatal grief and loss (stillbirth, infant loss, late term or multiple miscarriages, IVF journey)
Perinatal counselling is not for:
  • Common conditions such as postpartum blues
  • Emergency mental health services such as postpartum psychosis
Referral Details: Referrals and consultation requests are accepted from health professionals in the Island Health area. Fill out and send the referral form, after which the care coordinator will review referral details, connect with the parent by phone, and spend time matching them with a perinatal counsellor. When possible, the first session with the counsellor is scheduled within one to two weeks of the referral.

In some cases, self-referrals from parents may be accepted by phone.

In-person and video counselling is provided by independent counsellors at multiple locations in the Capital Regional District (including the Fort Street address below); the location of in-person appointments will be confirmed upon scheduling.
