Take a Hike Education Program - For vulnerable youths at risk of dropping out

Provided by Take a Hike Foundation

A full-time mental health and emotional well-being program embedded in an alternate education classroom for vulnerable youth ages 15 to 19 (Grades 10 to 12) who are at risk of dropping out of school or who have already dropped out.
Take a Hike has a powerful, positive impact on youth and communities through improvements in mental and physical well-being, social and emotional development, and academic development.

The distinctive model supports learning, healing and growth through four key areas:
  • Academics: Experiential learning and individualized support leading to graduation.
  • Mental Health Support: Daily engagement with an embedded mental health clinician.
  • Land-based Learning: Weekly day trips and 1-2 annual overnight trips.
  • Community: A sense of belonging among a unique program community
Program staff include a full-time registered clinical counsellor who supports students in building social and emotional skills and improving mental health and well-being. The aim is to help youth who have experienced difficulty in the mainstream system to succeed socially and academically, leading to high school graduation. Operates on a semester basis from September to January and February to June. Applications through school board alternative school programs stream.
