Child Abuse and Counselling Programs

Provided by Victoria Child Abuse Prevention and Counselling Centre

Provider of therapy and victim services for families with children or youth in Greater Victoria who experienced abuse.
The following programs are offered:
  • Counselling: Individual counselling support is available for child and youth victims 18 years and younger.
  • Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP): This counselling program is designed for children and youth 18 years and under where sexual abuse is suspected or confirmed and/or for children under 12 with sexual behavior problems.
  • Youth with Sexual Behavior Problems Program (YSBP): The Ministry of Children & Family Development (MCFD) supports a specialized program which allows eligible youth 12-18 to access individual counselling that includes family support to address sexual behavior problems for non-adjudicated youth. All referrals for this program must go through MCFD Child and Youth Mental Health Gatekeeper.
  • Child Abuse Trauma Counselling (CATC): When funding is available, VCAPCC provides support for Greater Victoria children, youth and caregivers who have experienced other forms of child abuse including physical, emotional, neglect, or witnessing domestic violence.
  • Child and Youth Advocacy Centres (CYACs): Child-focused centres that provide a coordinated approach to cases of reported child abuse. A team of professionals, including law enforcement, victim services, and child protection workers, work together to support children, youth, and caregivers who access the centre to ensure that they feel safe, informed, and supported.
  • Prevention: A variety of prevention programs and services are offered throughout the community, including school-based prevention programs, parenting groups, youth groups, and Victim Service initiatives. ​​

The following victim services are offered:
  • Police accompaniment and family support at the time of forensic interviews at the Victoria and West Shore Child and Youth Advocacy Centres or at a police station or other location
  • Accompaniment to hospital medical examinations
  • Support and information about the criminal justice process for children, youth, and non-offending family members
  • Child and youth victim and witness preparation for court
  • Liaison with police and criminal justice personnel,
  • Accompaniment for Crown Counsel meetings
  • Court accompaniment and information throughout the criminal justice process
  • Referrals to community resources and counselling
Victim Service workers have specialized expertise in supporting children and youth up to age 19 involved in the criminal justice system. Services are available for all child/youth victims and witnesses of violent crimes, abuse, and assault, including domestic violence and child protection cases. Children, youth, families, service providers, and Crown can provide referrals.

Victim Services also provides assistance with Victim Impact Statement, advocacy and assistance in accessing programs such as the Crime Victim Assistance and Victim Notification programs, information about rights under the Victims of Crime Act.
