Residential Schools Health and Wellness Support Program - Emotional and Cultural Support

Provides mental health and emotional supports to eligible former Indian Residential School students and their families.
The FNHA is working with communities and provincial and federal partners in light of the retraumatizing effects of recent residential school discoveries to identify needs and offer supports and services to address those needs.

The Residential Schools Support Program provides culturally safe, trauma-informed mental health, emotional, and cultural support to former Residential School students and their families in British Columbia. The program recognizes the deep and ongoing intergenerational impacts caused by the Residential School system and supports healing at individual, family and community levels.

Services include:
  • Cultural Support: Guided by Elders, traditional healers and local cultural support workers. Includes dialogue, cultural ceremony, prayers, and traditional healing practices to assist individuals and families in processing residential school experiences.
  • Emotional Support: Delivered by Aboriginal mental health workers and support staff. Provides safe opportunities to talk about experiences, share feelings, and receive guidance throughout the Settlement Agreement or personal healing journeys.
  • Professional Counselling: Access to registered psychologists and social workers experienced in working with First Nations people. Counsellors help participants explore trauma, coping strategies, and pathways to wellness.
  • Safe Gatherings: Assemblies, rallies, and protests are one way in which people can express their shared views and beliefs.
  • Transportation Assistance: Support to cover travel costs for accessing counselling or other program services when needed.
  • Additional Community Supports:The FNHA Community Supports Guide provides information about cultural wellness & healing grants, 24-hour crisis lines, counselling and cultural supports, and relevant provincial and federal funding resources.
