Services to Adults uphold the rights of adults who are unable to manage their own affairs. This role includes helping them with financial and legal matters, and supporting their lifestyle and health care decisions.
The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) works to protect the legal, financial, personal and health care interests of adults who require assistance in decision making

The PGT provides a range of services to adults who may need help managing their affairs as well as to their families, legal representatives, the courts and the general public. Services to adults fall into the following areas:
  • Helping an Adult Get Support and Receiving Reports of Abuse or Neglect
  • Substitute Health Care Decision Making
  • Financial Management and Personal Decision Making Services for Adults
  • Review and Monitoring of Private Committees
  • Other Protective Services
  • Personal Planning
  • Woodlands Class Action

Substitute Health Care Decision Making - Provides assistance under the Health Care (Consent) and Care Facility (Admission) Act, for individuals unable to make their own health care decisions and who do not have a substitute decision-maker available. When an eligible person is not available, or there is a dispute in choosing between equally ranked decision-makers, the Public Guardian and Trustee is called upon to authorize a suitable decision-maker or to make substitute treatment decisions.
